OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influencing factors in sports initiation and in School Physical Education that interfere with the continuity of sports practice and physical exercise in adulthood.
METHOD: A quantitative, cross-sectional, and retrospective study based on the application of the Inventory of Motivation for Regular Physical Activity Practice - IMPRAF -1261 and conducting a semi-structured interview. This study was conducted in conjunction with the care of university athletes from Santo Amaro University, as well as volunteers from the Jardim das Imbuias community.
RESULTS: Sixty-five volunteers aged between 19 and 54 years were analyzed, with 31 (47,7%) being female and 34 (52,3%) male. Among women, 74.2% declared themselves active and 25.8% sedentary, while among men, the percentages were 85.3% and 14.7% respectively. Among the active participants, according to the results of the application of the Inventory of Motivation for Regular Physical Activity Practice (IMPRAF 126), 52% of participants engaged in physical activities for health purposes, 21% for aesthetic purposes, 19% for pleasure, 4% for stress management, and 2% for social purposes. Among sedentary participants, 54% would engage in activities for health purposes, 23% for stress management, 15% for aesthetic purposes, and 8% for pleasure. Social motivation did not meet metrics among sedentary participants. Among active women, 65% said there was an influence from the School Physical Education Teacher, with this influence being negative for 54% of them. Active men reported an influence from the School Physical Education Teacher in 66% of cases, with 44% of them reporting this influence as negative.
CONCLUSION: After analyzing the data, the study revealed that the value of physical activity for health purposes is already recognized among people and that there is an influence from the School Physical Education Teacher; however, it may contribute to sedentarism in adulthood.
