Diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in canine sporotrichosis: a case report

Objective: To describe the case of sporotrichosis in a dog treated at the Hospital Veterinário Escola, in the city of São Paulo, reporting its clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Methodology: Longitudinal descriptive study of a case report of a female SRD canine patient, rescued by an owner, who presented integumentary and respiratory manifestations, treated in the Medical Clinic sector of the Veterinary Hospital of Universidade Paulista, São Paulo, SP, Brazil. The information contained in the case description was obtained by reviewing the medical records, reports and exams, and reporting the clinical manifestations presented by the patient. The study was approved by the animal research ethics committee of the educational institution under registration number 8295071222. Results: The patient presented non-painful, non-pruritic ulcerated lesions, hyperkeratosis and alopecia of the rostral and pelvic limbs, accompanied by nasal discharge and sialorrhea. The animal was subjected to cytopathology, histology and radiography, in addition to biochemical and hematological tests, which were inconclusive. Without showing improvement despite undergoing treatments with antibiotics and steroidal anti-inflammatories, mycological culture was carried out, which defined Sporothrix spp infection and antifungiogram, which despite having revealed intermediate resistance to itraconazole. The drug was chosen for treatment under conditions of 10mg/kg SID/180 days. After this period, the integumentary and respiratory lesions regressed completely, and it is still recommended to maintain therapy for another 30 days, to avoid recurrence, with complete therapeutic success.
